Simple Vedic Maths Tricks for Multiplication by Mathcruise

In Maths, Multiplication is the core arithmetic topic. Believe it or not, most children struggle to do the multiplication correctly and efficiently throughout their life even when they progress to senior classes. Especially for complex multiplication questions (double by double, or double by triple) either they end up taking a lot of time or they simply cannot do it without the use of calculators. While using conventional Maths, many steps are needed to solve a problem whereas in Vedic Maths the same question can be solved in just a single step that drastically reduces the total time to solve that question. For multiplication, there are many popular methods in Vedic Maths. Let us explain some of these interesting Vedic math tricks for multiplication below.

Multiplication Trick #1

Double by Double = When Ten’s place is the same, and addition of One’s place digits is equal to 10

Step1 : Multiple common number (ten’s place) with its successor

Step1 : Multiple the two numbers which are at one’s place, and write in two digit format

Example 63 x 67

Step 1

6 x 7 = 42

Step 2

3 x 7 = 21

Answer

42 21

Example 71 x 79

Step 1

7 x 8 = 56

Step 2

1 x 9 = 09

Answer

56 09

 Multiplication Trick #2

Multiply any number with 5

This is the most interesting part in Vedic Maths. There are specific tricks for special cases and with practice over time, the child can quickly identify the best trick applicable in the given situation. In Vedic Maths every question can be done by using multiple tricks, but the USP (unique selling point) that will make you ahead in the game is whether you are able to identify the easy multiplication tricks from a vast pool of available tricks, and something which gives you answer in minimum time, as compared to traditional Maths or even the other Vedic Math tricks. Here are the steps to multiply any number with 5, using the best shortcut trick:

Step1 : Divide the number by 2

Step2 : Multiply the result of step-1 with 10

Example 98 x 5

Step 1

98 divided by 2 = 49

Step 2

Multiply the result 49 with 10

Answer

490

 Example 83 x 5

Step 1

83 divided by 2 = 41.5
Step 2

Multiply the result  41.5 with 10

Answer

415

Multiplication Trick #3

Multiply any number with 25

Now let us look at another special case, where we want to multiply any number with 25. The beauty here is that mostly this trick will follow the similar steps as mentioned in the previous situation, but with a slight variation that we will divide the number by 4 (instead of 2) in the first step. Rest all the steps remain exactly the same, and hence it is very easy to remember the trick as well. Isn’t this amazing?

Step1 : Divide the number by 4

Step2 : Multiply the result of step-1 with 100

Example 320 x 25

Step 1

320 divide by 4 = 80
Step 2

Multiply the result  80 with 100

Answer

8000

 Example 388 x 25

Step 1

388 divide by 4 = 97

Step 2

Multiply the result  97 with 100

Answer

9700

 Multiplication Trick #4

Multiply any two digit  number with 11, where the sum of two digits is less than 10

This trick is typically taught in the very beginning and is very easy to learn. Kids simply love this. Even kids as young as 5 years are able to learn this and apply within no time, with great accuracy. In fact the trick is so simple that most of the kids can easily do the steps without even using a paper or a pen. Try this yourself using the examples below.

Step1 : Write down both the digits of the number

Step1 : Insert the sum of both the digit in between the two digits, and you will get the answer

Example 34 x 11

Step 1 Write 3 and 4
Step 2 Insert the sum of both the digit i.e. 3+4=7 in between the two digits 3 and 4
Answer 3 7 4

Example 27 x 11

Step 1 Write 2 and 7
Step 2 Insert the sum of both the digit i.e. 2+7=9 in between the two digits 2 and 7
Answer 2 9 7

Now that we have seen some of the most basic and interesting multiplication tricks of Vedic Maths, you should be able to practice these yourself. Once you practice you will appreciate how easy and simple these are. Every Math topic (be it arithmetic or even the complex topics like trigonometry or calculus) can be solved easily, just in seconds, using the shortcut tricks of Vedic Maths. Believe it or not, once you start learning these tricks you will wonder why you did not start sooner!

Are there any other benefits of Vedic Maths other than the speedy calculations?

Absolutely yes, you will be surprised to know that Vedic Maths has numerous other advantages over and above making your Mathematics speed superfast.

  • Improved Ability to Focus – Regular Vedic Maths practice develops the ability to focus since the student regularly applies critical thinking while solving Vedic maths questions. He has to evaluate and identify the best trick to solve a given problem and in doing so he compares the multiple tricks to see which one will give the result in minimum time. This technique drastically improves concentration and focus.
  • Improves Pattern Identification and IQVedic Math training makes the student proficient in pattern identification since for a particular type of questions, a specific trick works best. For another pattern of questions, a different trick would need to be used. Over a period of time the Vedic Maths students identify the pattern so fast that they can literally crack the most complex IQ assessment exams since most of the questions in such exams are based on pattern identification.
  • Confidence Boost – All these advantages automatically boost the confidence level to great heights. Once your child starts solving the questions superfast and with high accuracy, he develops an interest in maths and proactively puts in more effort in every new concept. Also he gets way ahead in his peer competition and all these lead to much higher confidence in him.
  • Immediate results – Vedic Maths is one such course which can be learnt even in a short time frame of just 1 month or more. It is so vast that you can continue this course for even 3 years, but in case you are hard pressed on time then you can still learn a few easy tricks within a month that you can effectively use in your day to day math problems.

By now you have understood some of the most common and easy multiplication tricks in Vedic Maths and also looked at the additional benefits. As we approach the end of this article let us also cover some of the important frequently asked questions on this topic.

Frequently Asked Questions

Q: What is the right age to learn Vedic Maths?

A: A great question, and this must be considered before you enroll your kids into Vedic maths classes. The recommended age to enroll into Vedic Maths classes is 11+ years since by that age the students typically cover all the basic arithmetic operations like addition, division, multiplication etc and also some other advanced Math topics like basic geometry which they then learn to solve in Vedic maths. If a child is younger than 11 years he may not be able to learn the shortcut tricks effectively and the topics that he can learn in vedic maths will also be very limited. Reason being that Vedic Maths teaches the alternate way to solve the problems of a given Math topic, but the precondition is that the child should have learnt that topic via traditional Maths, then he can very easily relate to the time saving that he is able to achieve in Vedic Maths. Refer our blog post “right age to learn Vedic Maths” on our website for a detailed insight into this question.

Q: Which course should I choose – Vedic Maths or Abacus?

A: Most parents often get confused that which one is a better course out of Vedic Maths or Abacus. If someone says that any course is better than the other, than it’s the wrong answer since the choice depends on multiple key factors like the age of child, need of the child and his interest areas. For example, if the child is in the age group of 5-15 years then Abacus is the preferred course. But even in 5-15 years age group if the child already has a good hold on arithmetic concepts via traditional maths then instead of Abacus training, it is advisable to go for Vedic Maths course where shortcut tricks for many more complex topics like Calculus can be learnt and this will create more interest in him. Similarly, if you are willing to be patient and put in effort for at least 6 months to one year, only then you should enroll in Abacus. Whereas in Vedic Maths you can safely learn a new trick in every class and even the short term Vedic Math course will yield good results. Q: Which one is better – Vedic Maths Online Classes or Offline?

A: Well this is my favorite question that I almost hear everyday. My answer to this question is simple – why do you want to limit yourself to offline classes which can provide only a few options, when you have the luxury to choose the best teacher via online mode irrespective of your physical location. We all know that the kids and teachers are both used to online mode of learning since the COVID times so it is a no-brainer today that you must go for Vedic maths classes online and give yourself more choices.
